Sheriff Warns of Toll Violation Scam Targeting Chattooga County Residents

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader is warning residents about a phony traffic citation notice circulating throughout the county that claims recipients failed to pay a toll and must appear in court or pay immediately.

The notice, which appears to be from the “State Court of Fulton County,” includes a QR code demanding payment and threatens arrest warrants, license suspension, and other penalties. Sheriff Schrader says the document is a scam and should not be taken seriously.

In a public statement, Sheriff Schrader said, “If you get one of these, consider yourself among about half the county today!! Everyone must have missed the toll at the same time!!! Don’t scan the QR and send money!”

Authorities are urging residents not to scan the QR code, not to send money, and not to provide personal information. Anyone who receives the notice should discard it and report concerns to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials remind the public that legitimate court notices and traffic citations will not demand immediate payment through random QR codes sent in bulk.

Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia are in for a cloudy and cooler stretch today and tonight (Tuesday, March 3, 2026) as a cool-air damming (CAD) wedge strengthens across the eastern side of the state. That setup is being driven by high pressure positioned off the Upper East Coast, funneling cool, moist easterly winds down the eastern seaboard and into Georgia. The result locally will be a gray, low-cloud kind of day, with low ceilings pressing into the region and holding temperatures down compared to what you’d normally expect this time of year.

Residents across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia will notice a cooler and cloudier start to the week as a Cold Air Damming (CAD) wedge builds down the East Coast and settles into Northeast Georgia.

Forecasters say mostly clear skies early Monday will quickly give way to increasing cloud cover, especially across Northeast Georgia. The strengthening wedge will push cooler air into the region, holding afternoon highs in the mid-50s in parts of Northeast Georgia. In contrast, areas farther south in Georgia could still see temperatures climb into the mid-70s.

Chattooga County and the rest of Northwest Georgia are waking up to patchy fog this Sunday morning, but clearer skies are quickly taking over as high pressure settles across the region. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia says mostly clear conditions will dominate today after the fog dissipates shortly after sunrise. Dry weather is expected to continue through Monday as a strong surface high builds down the Eastern Seaboard.

New unemployment benefit filings in Georgia declined last week, a sign layoffs may be easing slightly statewide even as national claims moved higher. The U.S. Department of Labor reports Georgia initial claims fell to 3,979 for the week ending February 21, down from 4,293 the week before (a drop of 314).

Nationally, seasonally adjusted initial claims rose to 212,000, up 4,000 from the prior week, according to the same weekly report.

In the week’s state-by-state movement, Rhode Island posted the largest percentage jump (from 1,154 to 2,677, about +132%) while Michigan saw the biggest percentage drop (from 7,315 to 3,667, about -49.9%).

Chattooga County voters may cast their ballots today in the Special Election for the 14th Congressional District Race and the 53rd State Senate Race. As of yesterday morning, Friday, February 27, 2026 there have been 70 absentee by mail ballots issued. Of those, 26 have been accepted and 44 are outstanding. Yesterday was the last day to submit an application for an absentee by mail ballot for the March 10, 2026 Special Election. An additional 1,051 ballots have been cast during Advance Voting so far. Advance Voting continues today. Polls are open from 9 AM – 5 PM for Saturday voting (Today, February 28, 2026). All Advance Voting takes place in the Chattooga County Registrars Office located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville. Government issued photo ID is required.
