Audit Reveals Financial Control Issues, Documentation Problems in Chattooga County Operations

A recently released audit of Chattooga County’s 2024 financial records identified deficiencies involving accounting procedures, procurement practices, internal controls, budgeting, and documentation. Major findings included more than $333,000 in ARPA-funded broadband project expenses that lacked sufficient supporting documentation, payments on road projects that exceeded approved bid amounts, missing procurement records, untimely bank reconciliations, and several departments exceeding approved budgets. Auditors also cited inadequate segregation of duties and training deficiencies. Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Andy Allen said “We walked into this mess” when he took office and agreed with the audit findings and said corrective steps have already been implemented, including added accounting staff, stronger oversight, improved documentation requirements, better procurement procedures, regular budget reviews, and additional employee training. Trion Recreation Department Summer Baseball Registration Ends Today

Parents still have time to sign up their children for Trion Recreation Department Summer Baseball, but the registration deadline is today, Monday, June 8.

The summer league will offer three age divisions, including 6U Coach Pitch, 8U Coach Pitch, and 11U Machine Pitch. The season is scheduled to run from July 10 through August 14.

The registration fee is $30 per player, and player age eligibility is based on the child’s age as of September 1.

Families interested in participating are encouraged to register at Trion Recreation before today’s deadline. Officials remind parents that registrations must be completed by the end of the day to guarantee participation in this year’s summer program.

The summer baseball program provides young athletes with an opportunity to develop their skills, learn teamwork, and enjoy organized competition during the summer months.

Trion Man Indicted on Aggravated Battery Charge

A Trion man has been indicted by a Chattooga County Grand Jury in connection with a January assault that prosecutors say left the victim without the use of his arm.

According to the indictment, Brian Hayes George, of 1184 Spring Creek Road in Trion, was formally indicted on one count of aggravated battery stemming from an incident that allegedly occurred on January 26.

The indictment alleges that George “maliciously caused bodily harm” to Matthew Rex Porter by depriving him of the use of his arm.

No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault were included in the court filing.

Under Georgia law, aggravated battery is a felony offense. The charge carries the possibility of a prison sentence if a defendant is convicted in court.

An indictment is a formal accusation and is not a determination of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Mr. H. Larry Hurley, age 79, of Broomtown, AL, died Saturday, June 6, 2026, at his residence.

Mr. Hurley was born November 28, 1946, in Summerville, GA, son of the late Hoyett Alfred Hurley and Mildred Pauline Jennings Hurley. He had attended Mount Zion Church and was owner of Hurley Farms. Mr. Hurley loved logging, mud bogging, fishing, and hunting.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Wright Hurley; and his second wife, Sheila Burleson Hurley.

Survivors include his sons, Dewayne (Shasta) Hurley, Casey (Amy) Hurley; sister, Betty Jo (Bill) Schatz; grandchildren, Logan (Hollee) Hurley, Lawson Hurley, Jake Hurley, and Mattie Hurley; chosen daughters, Dena (Kenny) Wilbanks, Jena Dawson; chosen grandchildren, Seth (Jessica) Dawson, Lacey (Andrew) McBrayer; brother-in-law, David (Remona) Wright; sister-in-law, Rita (Glen) Ezell; special friend and caregiver, Susan Tallent; and special friends, Sandra Beason and Bonny Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. (GA Time) Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim VanPelt officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Bethel Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Logan Hurley, Lawson Hurley, Stacy Dawson, Michael Hoyt Schatz, Logan Shook, and Dennis Moseley. Honorary pallbearers will be Dean Buttrum, Jr., Tommy Miller, Johnny Roberts, Steve Davis, Tim Williams, Neal Compton, Keith Epps, and Danny Powell.

Mr. Hurley will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. (GA Time) until the hour of service on Wednesday.

The Hurley Family would like to say a special thanks to VIP Care Centre, Cherokee Home Health, Southern Care New Beacon Hospice, Pam Flynt, Susan Hightower, Connie King, Sharon Manney, and Pat Caygle.

Mrs. Joyce Elaine Bryant, age 69, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, June 7, 2026, at her residence.

Mrs. Bryant was born March 10, 1957, in Anniston, AL, daughter of the late William M. Smith and Betty Jo Bishop Bryant. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed with Mohawk Industries.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Johnny William Bryant; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her husband, Terry Bryant; sons, Jeffrey Joe Bryant, Terry Lee Bryant, Billy Bryant, Steven Dale Bryant, and Thomas Gerald Bryant; brothers, William Smith, Wayne Smith, David Smith, and Thomas Searcy; sisters, Patricia Matney and Wanda Champion; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Mrs. Bryant will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

There will be no formal funeral service.
