Chattooga County Commissioner Andy Allen told WZQZ News as of 11 AM, most roads in the county are in good shape. Notable exceptions are areas on Little Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain. The commissioner says that right now, public works is focusing on State Line Road and Gilreath Mill Road at Cloudland. Travelers in the higher elevations should continue to use extra caution. The commissioner and sheriff’s department will be monitoring roads overnight, but Commissioner Allen says there could be isolated slick spots on Sunday morning and drivers should continue to use caution..
New Echota-Cherokee Capital State Historic will host “Cast Iron Cookware 101” on January 25, 2 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Visitors will learn how to care for and use cast iron cookware. The rangers will demonstrate how to “season” cast iron cookware and some of the common recipes the Cherokee would use in their everyday life. Visitors will also learn about common ingredients that the Cherokee used for their medicine and food. All ages are invited to this program. In honor of former President Jimmy Carter, President Biden has declared a National Day of Mourning for tomorrow, January 9, 2025. President Carter’s state funeral will be conducted a the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Local postal officials want to remind residents that all U.S. Post Offices will be closed on Thursday. Following the state funeral, President Carter’s body will be flown back to Georgia and there will be a private service at his home church, Maranatha Baptist, in Plains. President Carter will then be buried at his home in downtown Plains, about a mile from Maranatha Baptist where he and his wife were members.
