Long before GPS, interstate highways and modern road signs, the map of Chattooga County was dotted with small communities whose names were familiar to generations of local residents.

Some survived. Others changed names or gradually disappeared.

One of the more unusual was Sprite, Georgia.

Small Earthquake Reported About 18 Miles From Summerville

A small earthquake was recorded in Northwest Georgia early Saturday morning, with the epicenter located west of Resaca and roughly 18 miles east of Summerville.

According to information from the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information, the magnitude 2.4 earthquake occurred at approximately 4:54 AM EDT on Saturday, August 22.

The earthquake was centered about 6.3 miles west of Resaca, on the west side of Interstate 75. Resaca itself is approximately 24 miles east of Summerville as the crow flies, placing the reported epicenter about 18 miles from Summerville.

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake is considered minor. Earthquakes of that size can sometimes be felt by people close to the epicenter, particularly indoors or during the quiet early-morning hours, but they generally are not strong enough to cause damage.

Small earthquakes are not unheard of in North Georgia. The region is capable of producing minor seismic activity, although most earthquakes recorded in Northwest Georgia are small and may only be detected by sensitive seismic instruments.

The University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information, commonly known as CERI, operates seismic monitoring equipment throughout portions of the central and eastern United States and tracks earthquake activity across the region.

There were no immediate reports of damage associated with Saturday morning’s earthquake.

The Chattooga County Agricultural Fair opens later this week, and while temperatures are looking fairly typical for late August, fairgoers may want to keep an eye on the forecast as showers and thunderstorms could affect portions of the four-day event.

Mrs. Gladys Carter Reese age 89 of Summerville, GA passed away Friday, August 21, 2026, at her residence.

Mrs. Reese was born September 3, 1936 in Summerville, GA to the late George and Emma Key Carter. She was a member at Trion Heights Baptist Church and the Women’s Sunday School Class. She worked at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in the 1980’s, where she served as volunteer coordinator.

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, James “Jimmy Reese, Jr; siblings, Elizabeth Powell, Jessie Purcell, Faye McWhorter, Billy Carter, and James Carter; and son-in-law, Terry L. Johnson.
Survivors include her children, James “David” Reese, III and Deborah Johnson; brother, Gene Carter; grandchildren, Terry L. Johnson, Jr. and Tera Gunderman; great-grandchildren, Kayla Cotton, Krista Johnson, and Haley Olles; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Graveside and interment services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Reese will take place at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 23 at AMI Cemetery with Rev. Vernon Johnson Officiating. Pallbearers will be David Reese, Lee Johnson, and Kayson Koonce.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 until 1:30 at Mason Funeral Home.
