Mr. Jimmy B. Palmour, Obit (C)

Mr. Jimmy B. Palmour, age 89 of the Spring Creek Community, passed away Friday, August 7, 2026 at his residence.

Mr. Palmour was born in Summerville, Georgia on May 5, 1937, son of the late Samuel Grady Palmour and Georgia Weaver Palmour. He was an ordained deacon, a member of the Pennville Baptist Church and had been attending the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Palmour was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served during peace time between the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was an electrician by trade, working for the TVA and Teems Electric, and was a member of the IBEW Local 175 in Chattanooga. Mr. Palmour was a member of the former Old Time Picking and Grinning Group, the Serenaders Band and a former member of the Wildlife Association and the Liar’s Table at Jim’s Restaurant. He enjoyed being out on his John Deere tractor and spending time with his family.

In addition to his family, Mr. Palmour was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Palmour and Frances Palmour.

Mr. Palmour is survived by his wife, Judy Palmour; son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Beth Palmour; daughter, Georgianna Palmour; brother and sister-in-law, Grady and Ann Palmour; grandson, Christopher Ward; and nephews, Sam Palmour, Mack Palmour and Cooper Palmour.

Funeral Services for Mr. Palmour will be held Sunday, August 9, 2026 at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. James Baird and Rev. David Romine officiating. Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

The following gentlemen have been asked to serve as pallbearers and should assemble at Coffman Funeral Home at 2:30 P.M. Sunday: John Weaver, Rickey Broome, D.J. Driver, Tracy McWhorter, Sheriff Mark Schrader and Scott Coley.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1:00 P.M. until the service hour at the Coffman Funeral Home.

The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to Betina, Kim and Lisa of Heyman Hospice for their excellent care and compassion shown during the illness of Mr. Palmour.

MR. ROBERT ALVIN (BOB) BLACKWELL, age 79, of Summerville, Georgia went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 6, 2026. He was born January 18, 1947 to the late John and Sara Martin Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell was retired from the maintenance department of Mohawk Industries. Bob was hard working, devoted family man, who enjoyed antique stores, old trucks, porch sitting, and tinkering in his shop. Above all, he loved his Family deeply and spent his life helping and sacrificing to make their lives better. His steady presence, generous heart, and quiet acts of love will be deeply missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the late Dianne Smith Blackwell, his brothers, the late Ralph, Tommy, Ronald, and Bill Blackwell and a sister, the late Wanda Prather.

Surviving are, daughters, Mary Ann (Donny) Blackwell, Karen (Steve) Odom, and Renee Blackwell; grandchildren, Brittney (Michael) Nicholson, Dustin Blackwell, Erika (Keith) Simmons, Sara Jo Haney, and Jacob (Kayla) Odom; great grandchildren, Jet Johnson, Evie and Molly Nicholson, Dartey Robert and Sutton Blackwell, Sophia and Greyson Simmons, and Cooper Hedgecloth; siblings, Donald (Nancy) Blackwell, Sara Anna (Mike) Stoker, Danny Ray (Christy) Blackwell, and Gary (Teresa) Blackwell; sisters-in-law, Betty Smith and Cindy Cotton; several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 8th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Brother Russ Blackwell and Brother Mike Odom officiating, entombment in Greenhills Memory Garden. Active Pallberarers will be John Blackwell, Rodney Blackwell, Clint Dillard, Luke Blackwell, Donald McGraw, and Terry Green. The Family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 noon until 2 :00 P.M. at the Funeral Home.

Dog lovers will want to mark their calendars for next Saturday, August 15, when Downtown Dog Daze returns to Summerville for a day dedicated to four-legged friends and the people who love them.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Summerville Train Depot and along East Washington Street.

Downtown Dog Daze will feature a variety of activities and services for dogs and their owners, including dog adoption opportunities through the Chattooga County Animal Shelter, a photo booth, dog grooming by Bishop’s Dog Grooming, a Pup Cup Station, vendors offering dog products, arts and crafts, food, and a kiddie pool cooling station sponsored by Mr. Pickles Dog Bakery.

Free rabies, DHPP and Bordetella vaccinations will also be offered, sponsored by HSNEGA in partnership with the Chattooga County Animal Shelter.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Pup Strut at noon.

Visitors can also look forward to the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum steam engine passenger train during the event.

Downtown Dog Daze is presented by the City of Summerville, Mr. Pickles Dog Bakery LLC and Bishop Grooming.

The Summerville Train Depot is located at 111 East Washington Street.

Sunset Paddle Set For This Evening At Sloppy Floyd State Park

James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park will offer visitors a chance to enjoy the lake as the sun goes down with a special Sunset Paddle this evening.

Park rangers will lead participants on a paddle around the park’s lower lake from 8 until 8:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the park office by 8 p.m.

The cost is $20 per person with kayak rental included, or $10 per person for those bringing their own kayak. A $10 park pass is also required, and participants must register in advance.

Those taking part should bring drinking water and wear clothing that can get wet.

Northwest Georgia Public Health Urges Heat Safety, Fall Vaccination Preparation

With the dog days of August bringing continued heat to Northwest Georgia, public health officials are reminding residents to take precautions outdoors while also beginning to prepare for the upcoming fall respiratory illness season.

Dr. Gary Voccio, Health Director for the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Northwest Health District, recommends scheduling outdoor activities during the early morning or late evening whenever possible rather than during the hottest part of the day.

Residents are also encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and avoid heavy foods during periods of high heat.

At the same time, health officials are looking ahead to fall and flu season. Voccio says this is a good time to consider vaccinations against influenza and other respiratory illnesses, particularly for older adults and young children.

With a new school year getting underway, parents are also encouraged to make sure their children are up to date on recommended vaccinations.
