The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a break-in at an apartment on Milton Circle in Summerville last week. The complainant told the responding deputy that three times that day, someone had entered her apartment and that she was sure that the door was locked each time she left. On one of the burglar’s visits, they left a package of Marlboro cigarettes. The complainant said that no one that lives in her apartment smokes. Nothing was taken from the apartment, but the complainant wanted a report on file with the sheriff’s office.

Last week, the Georgia State Senate passed Senate Bill 69. Sponsored by Sen. Ben Watson (R – Savannah), it would provide placement of a monument for the Honorable Clarence Thomas within the capitol building or the capitol grounds.
An employee at Walmart in Trion reported the theft of cash from her personal vehicle after she discovered someone had stolen $140 from her car parked near Wendy’s. The incident was reported on Wednesday of last week. A responding deputy spoke with the employee who said that she was unable to lock her car because she didn’t have a key for the door. The woman said that she came out during her break and found that the money was missing from a compartment inside the vehicle. The incident was turned over to an investigator.
As the Georgia General Assembly approaches the half-way point of the 2023 legislative session, State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) has released his legislative report for the fifth week of the session. Lumsden said that there was broad bipartisan support for a bill that will give the Georgia Port Authority the ability to investigate criminal offenses and issue traffic citations within one mile of port owned properties. According to a report released by the Summerville Police Department this week, a Gadsden, Alabama man was recently arrested and charged with DUI, but was released from the Chattooga County Jail due to his medical condition.
State Senator Colton Moore crossed party lines and voted with Democrats this week on an anti-gang measure that has the backing of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. Moore said that the bill, which would require judges to impose prison sentences of at least five years on those convicted of recruiting gang members, would have the unintended consequences of increasing the number of plea bargains between prosecutors and criminals. Moore said, “Plea bargains allow the innocent to get improper justice and the guilty to get less than deserved. This is not the way to solve street gang crimes”. Most Democrats opposed the bill because it would lead to harsher sentencing for low-level gang members, instead of powerful gang leaders. The bill passed the Senate and now moves to the Georgia House for a vote.
