Salvation Army of Rome Seeks Donations, Volunteers This Spring

The Salvation Army of Rome is encouraging continued community support this spring as the organization works year-round to provide services to residents in both Floyd and Chattooga counties.

Major Hank Harwell, Corps Officer, says while the nonprofit receives strong support during the holiday season, donations are needed throughout the year to sustain ongoing programs and assistance efforts.

Those wishing to contribute can donate online at www.salvationarmyrome.org, or mail or deliver donations to the Salvation Army office located at 317 East 1st Avenue in Rome.

In addition to monetary donations, the organization is also seeking gently used items for the Salvation Army Rome Family Store. Volunteers are also needed to help support operations and outreach efforts.

The Salvation Army of Rome serves individuals and families across Floyd and Chattooga counties, providing vital assistance to those in need.

Local donors and volunteers will be recognized during National Salvation Army Week, set for May 11–17, with an Appreciation Luncheon scheduled for May 12 at the Rome Civic Center.

The Chattooga County Emergency Management Agency is encouraging residents to give back and help save lives by participating in an upcoming community blood drive on Friday, April 10.

The event will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the EMA office located at 170 Farrar Drive in Summerville. Organizers say just one donation can help save up to three lives, making community participation especially important.

Those who donate between April 1 and April 15 will also be entered into the Blood Assurance “BA Local Hero” promotion, with a chance to win one of several $100 gift cards being awarded across participating communities.

Appointments can be scheduled online through Blood Assurance, and walk-ins may be accepted as space allows. Officials encourage residents to consider donating and supporting the ongoing need for blood supplies across the region.

Residents in Chattooga County will have an opportunity to help save lives during an upcoming community blood drive hosted at the Chattooga County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) in Summerville. The blood drive is scheduled for Friday, April 10, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the EMA facility located at 170 Farrar Drive.

The event is being organized in partnership with Blood Assurance, and officials say a single blood donation can help save up to three lives. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance through bloodassurance.org/schedule, though walk-ins may be accepted if space allows.

In addition, Blood Assurance is offering an incentive for donors. Anyone who donates between April 1 and April 15 will be entered to win a $100 gift card, with one winner selected per community and seven winners total.

Community leaders say blood donations are always needed to help hospitals maintain an adequate supply for patients requiring surgeries, treatments, and emergency care.

A community blood drive is happening today (Thursday, February 26, 2026) at Mount Vernon Mills in Trion, giving Chattooga County residents an easy way to help save lives close to home.

Blood Assurance is hosting the drive from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Mount Vernon Mills on 4th Street in Trion. Organizers are encouraging donors to stop by and help keep the local blood supply strong for area patients and hospitals.

Donors who give during Blood Assurance’s special promotion running February 15 through February 28 will be entered for a chance to win a $100 gift card. Blood Assurance says there will be one winner selected per community, with seven winners total.

Before donating, Blood Assurance recommends eating a good meal, drinking extra water, avoiding energy drinks, and bringing a valid ID.

Appointments can be scheduled online at www.bloodassurance.org/vernonmills, and walk-ins are typically welcome as space allows.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader of the Civil Rights Movement who helped bring national attention to the fight for equality through nonviolent action. The holiday is also recognized as a National Day of Service, encouraging people to give back to their communities as a way to honor Dr. King’s message.

Locally, a Day of Service will be held Monday, January 19th at Fairway Recreation Center, 81 Senior Drive, Summerville. The event begins at 10 AM with Felicia’s Kids, and everyone is invited to come and join this event sponsored by the Chattooga County MLK Committee.
