Residents across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia are dealing with a mix of cold, wind, and fire weather concerns this weekend as a Fire Danger Statement remains in effect for much of north and east central Georgia on Saturday.
Northwest Georgia is entering the heart of the state’s most active wildfire season, which typically stretches from January through April, and officials say this year is lining up with that familiar trend. Dry vegetation, gusty winds, and low humidity can combine quickly to turn a small spark into a fast-moving fire — especially during warm, breezy afternoons.
The City of Summerville Fire Department will conduct routine fire hydrant flushing on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., as part of ongoing system maintenance.
Officials say the work will primarily affect northeast Summerville, including the Highway 27 area and West Washington Avenue area. During the maintenance period, fire department personnel will perform essential tasks on hydrants across the city, including lubrication, flushing, and function checks.
Residents in affected areas may notice brief periods of water discoloration during the flushing process. City officials emphasize this is normal and safe. If discoloration occurs, residents are advised to run their tap for a few minutes until the water clears.
The City of Summerville thanks residents for their cooperation and understanding as crews carry out this important work to ensure the reliability of the city’s fire protection system.
A Tuesday morning house fire was reported before 5 a.m. at a home near Hunt Street and Highway 48 in Summerville.
The Summerville Fire Department responded to the scene along with Summerville Police and other emergency workers. Officials say the fire was contained to a single room, preventing it from spreading throughout the home.
No injuries were reported and there was no word as the cause of the fire.
Landowners across Northwest Georgia who want to learn more about prescribed burning will have an opportunity to get hands-on training during an upcoming Learn & Burn Workshop.
