Cloudy Start to the Week in Chattooga County; Much Warmer Weather Ahead

Residents across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia will notice a cooler and cloudier start to the week as a Cold Air Damming (CAD) wedge builds down the East Coast and settles into Northeast Georgia.

Forecasters say mostly clear skies early Monday will quickly give way to increasing cloud cover, especially across Northeast Georgia. The strengthening wedge will push cooler air into the region, holding afternoon highs in the mid-50s in parts of Northeast Georgia. In contrast, areas farther south in Georgia could still see temperatures climb into the mid-70s.

Wind Advisory Today as Colder Air Moves Into Northwest Georgia

Breezy northwest winds and a sharp drop in temperatures are impacting Chattooga County and much of Northwest Georgia today, with colder air expected to linger through Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST Sunday as a tight pressure gradient between a developing Nor’easter and high pressure over the Plains drives strong northwest winds across Georgia.

Chattooga County Schools Cancel Extracurricular Activities Due to Expected Snow

Chattooga County Schools have canceled all extracurricular activities scheduled for tonight, Friday, January 30, 2026, as well as events planned for this weekend, due to the forecast for snow beginning tonight and continuing into Saturday. School officials said information on rescheduled dates and times will be shared once details are confirmed.

The announcement was issued by Jeremy Heathcock with Chattooga County Schools, who encouraged families to stay warm and safe as winter weather moves into the area.

Indians Middle School soccer tryouts for grades 5–8 have been impacted by the cold snap moving into Northwest Georgia. Coaches say tryouts that were planned for Monday are cancelled due to cold temperatures and poor field conditions.

Dense Fog Advisory in Effect for Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect early Sunday for Chattooga County and surrounding counties across Northwest Georgia as widespread patchy dense fog reduces visibility in many areas. Patchy dense fog is expected between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday, with the thickest fog producing visibility as low as one-quarter mile or less.
